    MBA Guidance - What Makes A Good Profile In The Eyes Of Mba Admission Committees

    You may have 8 years of work experience and a 700+ GMAT score, but you must also have a very good profile to make the cut for Top B-Schools. So what consists of a good profile? Below I am outlining some things which will help you boost your profile. Remember Profile is something which is shown in your essays which I will talk about in later articles, but this will give you a good idea on what more you may need to do to make an attractive profile. I have tried to put these points in what I think is their order of importance:

    - Work-ex: Work experience is ofcorse a very important part of your whole profile. Your work experience should show growth in your career, substantiate your ambitions/decisions, your dependability and progress. [Later in when I discuss about Essays, I will discuss in detail about this]. The more work experience you have the more probability that you can put the above parameters in the right perspective. If you have ever been in a lead position that will certainly help.

    - Challenges: Challenges faced by you in life and at work, how good were you at handling them. The challenges could be interpersonal like firing a close friend, or during work like Gail Waynand fighting for Howard Roark [FountainHead by Ayn Rand, a very interesting read, I highly recommend it]. If you pulled through the challenges and still have a balanced career then thats a commendable effort. The difficult situation actually made a better person out of you. This will give your essay a good garnish, but you need to have something (like a certificate) to back this up.

    - Diversity: Diversity of cultural, social and technical know-how is a much appreciated skill. Ofcorse too many jumps from one job to another shows instability and indecision. But wider experience in the profession, international exposure etc give a huge boost to the profile's attractiveness. Good understanding of the culture, languages and history of the internationally visited countries adds a lot of gun powder into your profile.

    - Community Service/Voluntary services: Being active in community services, volunary organizations is a globally appreciated quality. Great regards are always due to those who take time off and help others. MBA committee is no different. The greater participation you have in community service, the greater respect your profile holds. Apart from participation if you have managed an even such as a blood donation drive, vaccination drive etc, extra value is added to your profile since it gives the idea that you are driven and capable of management.

    - Sports: Sports give an all rounder feel to the personality [All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy]. Solo sports are good to have, but excellence in team sports shows that you are a team player and this is an important quality of a future manager. Well at least in the eyes of the Ad Com it is. If you have captained in a team sport its another star added to your profile and if you have ever won a tournament as a captain, there is another star for you. Make sure you make a note of these in your resume too.

    - Languages: A very very handy tool on your resume. Speaking ability of more than 1 language gives quite a thrust to your chances of impressing the ad com. Especially if you are looking for non-US (non-English) B-School like Insead, your capability of communicating in French will give you an edge over other applicants. Similarly if you want to apply in a top Chinese school, your familiarity with Mandarin will go long ways in the eyes of the adcom.

    - Entrepreneurship: Ever tried doing a business of your own? If you did, this shows a lot about you. Even if you failed, the effort counts. Failure does hamper the effects a bit, but it can be attributed to in-experience, finances ... or other things. The important point is that you showed the business acumen and gained some valuable experience from it. This definitely helped you in becoming a better person, which in Ad Comms eyes is a good thing.

    Japanese Grandpa Finishes School

    Not all people are lucky to pursue a college education. There are numerous reasons why this may not be achieved. Financial difficulties, emotional problems and forced and unexpected circumstances are just some of them. But for people who put great value on education, anything is possible. We've heard of success stories involving parents and even the elderly who decided to continue their education at a later age and were still able to graduate and earn a degree.

    This latest success story is one for the books. Did you know that an 87-year-old great grandfather in Japan has earned his degree in economics in a university there? For this achievement, Yoshimichi Harada may be the country's oldest undergraduate after completing his dissertation on the theory of product distribution in November 2006. Although this Tokyo resident does not expect to get full-time employment, he aims to continue acquiring more knowledge and sharing his experiences with other students including those in high school.

    You may ask why Mr. Harada wasn't able to complete his college education. The story goes that during his time, children were expected to start working after completing even just five years of elementary education. Of his 53 classmates, only ten percent went on to high school because they came from well-to-do families. At age 20, Harada was drafted into the imperial army and was based in China for six years. Upon returning home, the poor young veteran had to scavenge for his own food. At that time, getting a formal education was also considered a luxury. Harada went through a life of labor supporting his family for half a century even until his children were already senior citizens. He last worked in the construction business and retired at the age of 76. The Japanese great grandpa recalled that he had long wanted to go back to school to earn higher education. Harada added that ever since he began working in the construction industry, he was always reading textbooks, writing reports and memorizing important formulas.

    One day, he just told his children and grandchildren that he had to cut off their financial support to spend for his own education. Surprisingly, his family welcomed with much fervor Harada's decision and gave him new clothes, shoes and bags for use during his schooling. While in the university, this senior student adjusted well to his new surroundings. He even joined friends for drinks at bars after school and shared notes with them before exams.

    The elderly student believed that many senior citizens in Japan would like to continue their education if only they can. It's sad though that many of them find it hard to spend the money they earned because of their responsibility to their children and extended family. A government survey showed that more than 20 percent of Japanese are now over 65 years old and continue to support their families. Harada, however, thinks that they should also make use of their earnings and take new directions in their life similar to what he did. He not only earned his college degree but was also able to experience a modern curriculum and technology in school that most elderly haven't known. Although the grandpa scholar did learn typing, he believed writing by hand was still faster. And so he just handwrote his 60-page senior thesis on business economics and theory of distribution.

    Job Interview Answers - A List Of 8 Traits All Hiring Managers Are Looking For

    Job Interview coming up? ... Keep in mind that whether they know it or not, all Hiring Managers are looking for certain characteristics or "Behavioral Competencies."

    One of the most important is CONFIDENCE. Now, all of us have made mistakes in the past, and maybe all of your performance reviews have not exactly been "glowing," but the point is not to live your life looking in the rear view mirror. If you know you have made mistakes, and you are working on improving yourself, then there is no reason why you shouldn't move forward with CONFIDENCE and an EXPECTATION OF SUCCESS.

    Review the following Behavioral Competencies with CONFIDENCE. Nobody is a super-person that exhibits all of these characteristics at 100%, but if you have ever worked any job then you have exhibited all of these characteristics to some degree. EMPHASIZE THE POSITIVE when you formulate your interview answers, and think of times on the job when you HAVE exhibited these characteristics -- NOT times when you might have failed to.

    What you want to demonstrate to the Hiring Manager: Courage / Persuasion: This is your ability to increase your determination to get the job done when you are faced with resistance or a difficult situation. Show the ability to move people towards a commitment to buy or act. Demonstrate that you are fair and nice, but also show that you are aggressive and may even sometimes intimidate others. Don't be modest. Demonstrate confidence and the fact that you are not easily intimidated. Indicate the desire to influence the thinking of others. Show that you can gain agreement from others via logic, alternatives, and emotional appeals.

    Beliefs / Ethics: This is your capacity to believe strongly in what you do and emphasize service. Indicate loyalty so that the Hiring Manager knows that you won't quit after three months -- or leave your clients hanging and out of the loop. This quality is key to the development of accounts and customer satisfaction. Show that you will act in terms of what is right. Demonstrate that you follow through and actually do what you say you will do.

    Commitment: This is your capacity for becoming dedicated to your work. You should demonstrate a strong belief in what you do. Demonstrate that you are willing to make a sacrifice for people when appropriate because you are a COMMITTED person. Show a strong responsibility and commitment to not only the Hiring Manager and the company, but even more importantly, to customers and clients.

    Work Orientation / Stamina: This is your capacity to handle mental intensity and hard work. Indicate the high tempo and speed at which you work, and your capacity for endurance. Show that you invest the TIME and ENERGY necessary to get the job done right the first time, consistently.

    Interpersonal Skills / Charm: This is your capacity to know how and when to get things done with people. Show that you are outgoing and charming, and that you are especially effective in this regard when you have an objective in mind, or need someone to do something. Demonstrate that you have an intrinsic need to win the approval of others, fit in, and get along. Show that you have the ability to build quick relationships with people.

    Discipline: Demonstrate that you have inner standards that make you both predictable and productive. Show that you enjoy the responsibility of planning and carrying out your own schedule. Indicate that you can motivate yourself to work on a task until completion.

    Competitiveness: This is your drive to be better than others. Show that you like to compete and have the desire to win, and show the maturity of knowing how this benefits everyone.

    Focus: This is your ability to determine what is important, set priorities for tasks, and maintain direction. Show that you understand how to set short and long-term objectives, and how to intelligently schedule these objectives so that you hit your goals and complete.

    Back-Burnered San Francisco Schools Committee Now Moving to Forefront

    In 2003, a committee was created with members appointed from the city Board of Supervisors and the Board of Education. In the beginning, the committee was used to discuss joint concerns on issues, such as affordable housing for teachers, student nutrition, and graffiti in the San Francisco schools. Unfortunately, the structure of the joint committee was a matter of contention from the committee's inception with an imbalance of power.

    The Board of Supervisors control the forum. They decide what issues are put on the meeting agendas for discussion. They have the right to make inquiries of the San Francisco schools' officials, who are expected to respond to all inquiries. Unfortunately, this is a one-way power structure.

    The San Francisco schools are funded by the state and not accountable to city or county governments. The structure of the committee makes the San Francisco schools' officials accountable to the city's Board of Supervisors and doomed from the beginning. Thus, the committee has met rarely in the past couple of years.

    Though the San Francisco schools' officials and city supervisors were scheduled to meet twice monthly in 2006, it did not happen, according to Jill Wynns, a veteran San Francisco schools' board member. Unfortunately, 2006 was a year the committee was most needed. There were several San Francisco schools issues in the forefront last year that caused undue tensions within the San Francisco schools and the community. There were several closures of San Francisco schools, for example, as well as decisions on the use of voter-approved enrichment funds (from the city) for San Francisco schools' expenditures.

    A new committee chairman has been appointed to help bring the committee back to life. Chairman Bevan Dufty, a member of the Board of Supervisors, is promising a more mutual relationship within the committee to build more and better communication between the two leaderships.

    In order to breath new life into the committee, Dufty plans to approach the forum as equal partners between the city supervisors and the San Francisco schools' officials, beginning with agenda items. San Francisco schools' officials now will be able to submit requests to put issues on meeting agendas. Though Dufty still has final say on the agenda items and there has been no commitment to two-way inquiries, this is a major first step toward positive change.

    Other members of the committee include veteran supervisor Sophie Maxwell, newly appointed supervisor Ross Mirkarimi, veteran San Francisco schools' official Jill Wynns, and newly-elected San Francisco schools' officials Jane Kim and Mydra Mendoza.

    It is hoped that the infusion of new people, especially the new chairman, will energize the committee into a partnership for positive change within the San Francisco schools.

    Cooperative Research Studies - It's Nature and Propagation

    The headquarters of Brahmavarchas Research Institute is Haridwar (Uttaranchal, INDIA). Over here its mode of action is classified in 4 parts:

    1) SCRIPTURAL RESEARCH: A comparative study of all spiritual tenets declared so far will be analyzed. Within this all those aspects which will help augment world humanity's sacred sentiments will be gathered separately. For this the literature content of our library is being replenished and added on a large scale. Further for teaching and education purposes other sources of literature and books are being tapped.

    2) SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH BASED EXPERIMENTATION: Within this section highly advanced apparatus and scientific technology has been set up. Experiments are conducted so as to find out which spiritual endeavor positively transforms ones outer and inner life. Yajnopathy is being scientifically tested in such a manner so as to present to the world, its most optimum and a wholesome form. As a result man's bodily strength, psychic balance and the soul's greatness will reach great pinnacles of success.

    3) COOPERATIVE ENDEAVOR BY WORLD SCIENTISTS AND THINKERS: In this section we will request great thinkers, philosophers and scientists of the world to take part in this research endeavor and thus help us come up with outstanding results. At the time of writing these lines (before 1991 A.D.) around 100 have already agreed to join our mission. Our target is to encourage at least 1000 such specialists to come to Haridwar for more or a short time span and contribute in this great research study.     These 4 sections and departments work in tandem with one another. Initially there were 20 resident research members. This number has increased by leaps and bounds over the years. In general all members are very capable and intelligent in their areas of research. Their lodging and boarding requirements are fulfilled by the Brahmavarchas Research Institute Those who are financially well off tend to take care of all their expenses. The rest are taken care of by the institute.

    Keeping contemporary requirements in mind our research activities revolve around them. Of course transformational changes are made as per the need of the hour. When one task is finished another one replaces it immediately. Sometimes a particular task is made more widespread if we realize that it is important to study it more deeply. Visitors are amazed to see this research team creating an atmosphere of joy on the one hand and yet minutely researching into various topics in a focused selfless manner. A special characteristic of this scientific experimentation involves encouraging the youth wing of world humanity to take up this utmost important endeavor of improving human destiny in the 21st century so as to make it radiant. We are trying to find out how far they will succeed in doing so. Our research efforts have their basis in Government Aid and those by the influential and wealthy class of society.     Our research institute nestles at the feet of the mighty Himalayas, on the shores of the sacred River Ganges where the Saptarshis (7 Rishis) of the Vedic Age had performed intense penance for the welfare of world creatures. If you superficially compare it with grand buildings and structure of the world one can say 'it is nothing great'. Despite this if one takes care to note the zest and zeal exuding from the members, walls, trees etc of the Brahmavarchas Research Institute one can conclude without doubt that it is not merely some inanimate organizational center but that every pore of its existence oozes with divine radiance/aura. This endeavor is being executed by great characters, supreme goals, sacred ideals and well directed programs. Hence we can safely conclude that this endeavor is extraordinary and that its results too will definitely be mind boggling.

    So far we have discussed the institute's activities. Whatever is taking place in this institute can be called the center of focus and yet we certainly cannot say that what is happening now or that what will take place in future will remain of this size only. In fact our activities are widespread and doubtlessly they will keep expanding enormously in the days to come. It goes without saying the task taken up is gigantic wherein the viewpoint of billions of people on Earth needs to be changed and guided to higher peaks of human/divine glory. It can be compared if at all to interstellar space research conducted with the help of high tech space crafts. Space centers that launch satellites etc stay put in one place on Earth (like for example NASA) and yet its area of functioning revolves around studying the state of interstellar space and planetary etc movements. Only those great scientists attached to space stations know exactly the functional aspects of space research. They know very well how difficult their task is and the extent to which highly advanced technology is made use of. The Era of Consciousness has thrown a challenge to great thinkers of the world. Atheism has taken over the intellect of the thinking class of the world. Thus they think narrowly and act very selfishly. Within this class albeit in minor forms the Rishi tradition yet does exist. Even a miniscule form of its help and influence the royal path of divine glory for world humanity will be thrown wide open for all to march ahead.

    The number of volunteers who are giving their precious time for our research studies is augmenting by leaps and bounds. We have requested them to come to Haridwar (Uttaranchal, India) as per their convenience and by staying here for a certain time span help us advance our scientific viewpoint and mode of research. We have requested them not to bring along with themselves their family and kids because everyone's attention will be distracted. Our research institute does not have any arrangement for accompanying family members to reside. Thus only those who wish to focus all their attention on our project need come albeit alone and we request them to give us as much of their valuable time as possible. If they come simply for 2 or 3 days maybe they can give us some theoretical advice but it will be impossible to imbibe their practical knowledge in such a meager time span. Hence we request our revered research volunteers to come here only when they have enough time to one pointedly focus on our research projects. In this atmosphere of calmness and camaraderie a lot of give and take of high scientific principles can take place. Our research study is extremely useful for all world beings. On it basis a lot can be achieved both materially and spiritually.

    Great thinkers, who because of a lot of prior commitments, cannot come to our institute are humbly requested to help our research study from their place of residence. The only condition is that they seriously focus on our research and contribute in a committed manner. They must look upon it as a sacred responsibility and like certain other routine chores spend a certain number of hours daily for our institute's endeavor. The time volunteered for this great task should be well defined and adhered to implicitly and only then something tangible will come our way. On the other hand if the attitude is quite superficial and 'frothy' we will be fooling ourselves only and that nothing concrete by way of research will be attained. There are a few who for self aggrandizement call themselves 'members' of our research team without being committed to our cause or contributing anything significant. This in a nutshell is just vain mockery on their part and is like basking on wrested laurels. Hence we sincerely hope that only those who are accountable and committed to our cause join as members of our team. Only those who have a certain time span for committed research on a regular basis need join our sacred institute. Thus let us pray in all humility that only genuine responsible researchers will join our research team and those who cannot come to our Institute are requested to stay at their place of residence and give us their invaluable research inputs.

    What kind of task will be given to which person based on his/her qualifications, credentials and the available circumstances? This question can be decided only when we all meet personally and discuss our research goals. And yet those who cannot come to Haridwar again and again can be given required assignments only after understanding the overall designing of our research endeavor. Members should first and foremost understand which subjects are currently being researched into avidly the world over. Thus they must search for libraries and other sources so as to avail all literature published up till now which will help our task in a big way. Of course they must concentrate on visiting gigantic libraries with latest broad based collections related to our research. We are not interested in libraries that predominate with fictitious novels, glossy magazines etc. We certainly have no illusions that such libraries can help us at all. Hence only nearby Colleges, Universities etc libraries can help us on a gigantic scale. Desirable literature of high standards can be found in good colleges and research institutes.

    There are many individuals who individually collect important literature for study purposes. Such people too could help us a great deal. Our research area is of a very high stature. Hence very little literature regarding it is available. It is futile to think that all literature required for our research will be found in one single place. Hence we all will have to visit various libraries, browse their collection deeply and sift through them so as to collect material most suited for our task at hand. Majority of the times mere title of the book cannot indicate to us whether our material is included in it. This is because the title maybe very chic and attractive but the contents within is absolutely superficial. There are so called writers who gather materials from various books and then try to sell it by giving it a chic title. Such rubbish in the name of literature is of no use to us. Hence we must not only read the title but sift through the pages of each book so as to collect matter suitable for our research activities. Where can we find material useful for the research studies in our institute? Which books and other forms of literature harbor the same? These questions will be answered by the members of our august research team. Their chief task is to enquire at various libraries etc and unearth useful literature.

    If the material found in a book is short it can be hand written else if it is long only the gist need be noted down. This is the first and foremost task required to be taken up. As and when this is gathered one copy should be kept by the researcher and another copy must be sent to Haridwar i.e. Brahmavarchas Research Institute.

    Before studying, finding books and making notes members should fisrt contact Haridwar else ones efforts may go in vain. Suppose one member in a particular place has taken down all required notes in an exhaustive manner and another member not knowing this collects the same material painstakingly know for sure that the latter's precious efforts will go waste. To overcome this problem all research team members should individually first contact Haridwar before commencing any task. Haridwar will direct each one as to what is his/her appointed task. Only then should they commence work. If one topic is covered in different places it will give us information regarding that topic in totality. Thus it is very important to be in touch with our HQ at Haridwar.

    In the preliminary stage 4 main topics have been taken up by us. And yet the branches and sub branches of each of these are many. In this manner although one is researching into a main subject yet it is classified into many sub topics. The more we minutely and deeply study each subject the more we will unearth extremely important information. It collection will doubtlessly be all encompassing. Thus from these 4 main branches each sub branch amongst many must be minutely researched into. Another way would involve studying many sub branches together if a particular sub branch is not giving much information. Thus some information of every sub branch can give us some insight into the main subject. Under such circumstances it becomes that much more necessary to keep in touch with our HQ. This is because keeping aside libraries of Universities those who can avail material only from small libraries will have to conduct research on many topics simultaneously. Under such circumstances a problematic situation may occur wherein many members from various regions will study one single topic and take down identical information which would be a waste of their precious time and energy. Hence we request every member to keep in touch with our HQ and submit information gathered by them over a certain time span. Thus his/her effort will not go in vain. Always make sure that you are not covering a topic already covered by someone else. And it can be done only by constantly keeping in touch with our HQ at Brahmavarchas Research Institute (Haridwar, Uttaranchal, India).

    Our research members will generally be graduates, post graduates etc. They will be given research topics for studies based on their expertise in a particular topic. It is obvious that if a person has graduated in a particular subject he/she will be more comfortable with that topic for research studies. Only literature is one field which does not generally require specialization in a particular subject. This is because it encompasses general knowledge. Hence graduates in literature can take up any topic. This is of course related to non technical general subjects. Thus an M.A. in Literature can enter into a very widespread area of research studies. Despite this because they are not specialists of any particular subject they cannot delve very deep into their research studies.

    Whatever has been noted down every month should be handed over to our HQ at Haridwar on the first day of the following month i.e. February notes should be handed over on March 1st etc. This is because when various notes are analyzed we know where there is room for improvement. If on the other hand a member collects a lot of material for a very long time span a problem can occur wherein if there is an error it will not be taken care of. Instead unknowingly the error will expand further and the member's precious time will go in vain.

    One more task required to be taken up by our research members is to search for deep thinkers who are naturally inclined towards research studies. No doubt, there are many well known thinkers but only a few are profound scholars in their fields. There exists a class of people who are good at dry arguments and are labeled as 'great philosophers'. And yet when it comes to profound thinking on a particular subject they fail miserably. It is easy to flaunt ones superficial 'intelligence' but it is a totally different story when it comes to manifesting deep wisdom in ones area of study. Hence it is not necessary to contact superficial so called thinkers. Instead it is imperative that we humbly search for wise profound thinkers of various fields. Such thinkers are constantly reading old and new literature. They are all the time finding out where wholesome activities are being executed and what their method is. Even if such profound thinkers do not have the time to join our research directly we can always request them to advise us as and when it is possible for them to do so. Their advice will be an invaluable contribution for helping us achieve our research target.

    There are many indigenous and foreign research based collections in all Universities. Some of these are not allowed for borrowing and that one has to sit there itself for reading purposes. These collections contain some very important findings and hence we must never ignore them. They will be extremely useful for our research endeavor. The responsibility of such studies will have to be taken up by those living near by such Universities.

    Many people subscribe to magazines and journals which publish materials related to their field of study. Later these magazines etc collect dust or are sold off at very meager prices. Hence research members are requested to gather such magazines etc and send them to Haridwar. Many a times very minor aspects of a subject when conjoined to some very useful research becomes very influential. Thus wherever one finds literature in which ever form especially that not used by anyone should be sent to Haridwar. Even if one gets the gist of a very expansive subject it would prove very beneficial for our research endeavor.

    Every research member should try and encourage more and more research experts to join our team. Of course the condition is that they must be well versed and deep thinkers of their fields of study. From the standpoint of school education it is not just enough that members are mere graduates, post graduates etc. This is because they no doubt 'mug' up their subjects and pass with flying colors but when it comes to deep thinking and research they fail miserably. Thus we will not benefit at all by such superficial 'scholars'. Their efforts go in vain because of lack of subtle skills and thus it could endanger our research endeavor. Thus we must refrain from amassing 'headaches' and instead search for true wise and deep thinkers of various fields. We must personally come in touch with them and humbly request them to help our glorious cause. The more our research members are brilliant and wise thinkers greater is our chance to attain our goal. Hence our contemporary members must remain very alert in this direction.

    Synopsis excerpt: Private Eye Sam Crown only partially fits the definition of the classical PI. In Volume 25, No. 1 of the Reflections in a Private Eye, the official publication of the Private Eye Writers of America (PWA), SJ Rozan, a former president of PWA, wrote an article that attempts to define the mythical meaning of the PI. She defines the default PI as the straight white male, born to power, who gives up that privilege as too corrupting, and remains in the allegorical underworld rescuing others. (Sam Crown has a very rich mother, and though he stays away from her high society life, he does not give up his sizable trust fund; hence he is not poor, a requirement of the default PI.)

    Review: Historically, I have not been a big reader of mystery novels. As a career police officer I've often found the portrayal of law enforcement to be, at best, inaccurate and unreliable. As a result I haven't invested much in these types of books. Having read Mr. Wootan's book, I've changed my mind. Not only is this book far more realistic, it's an outstanding read. It is a genuine page turner, and one of the better books I've read in a long time. The book is so well written, the reader can place himself/herself in the shoes of the characters. It mixes suspense with emotion in such a manner that the reader's attention is never lost.

    Mr. Wootan takes the characters and develops them and their relationships extremely well and in a most believable sense. The plot of "Crown's Law" is also well developed and unusual. The combination of these elements results in an outstanding book. If Mr. Wootan produces additional Sam Crown mysteries, he can count me as a reader. I've been sold on your work sir. Well done!

    Rocket Spanish Reviewed - Is This Program a Good Way to Learn Spanish?

    Rocket Spanish is a Spanish-language learning course produced by the Rocket Languages Group and is available in digital media. The learning course is downloadable in mp3 format and the sales pitch says that it is the easiest way to learn Spanish. Of course every vendor says that his program is the easiest, fastest and best! This review will focus on whether Rocket Spanish is all that it is cracked up to be or is it something less.

    Rocket Spanish teaches, using interactive speaking techniques, listening to and practicing dialog. The learner uses the new language to deal with familiar thoughts, situations and conversations, gradually expanding his understanding and ability to communicate. Through this method the student learns another language in a manner not too different from the way he learned his first language.

    This approach, pioneered and popularized by Michel Thomas, Paul Pinsleur and others, has achieved considerable popularity in recent times. There is much evidence that this method is one of the most effective ways to learn language.

    The course is downloadable in MP3 format. This enables the learner/student to listen to it either on his or her computer or to download it to an iPod or other MP3 player or burn a CD and hear it on any CD player. This gives the learner great flexibility in choosing where and how to listen to the course materials.

    A unique feature of the course is the way it uses online interaction to teach. For example, you are shown an object and then given three options to pick the Spanish name for the object. This is critical to help you learn to go from the object directly to the name for it in Spanish.

    The natural beginners tendency is to go from object to English name to translation to Spanish name. You will need to get past that and go direct from object to name of object in Spanish. This lets you begin to think in the language, a necessity to develop fluency. Rocket Spanish is very good at helping you do exactly that.

    The course consists of 31 interactive lessons, which you can go through at your own speed. Fast would be 2-3 weeks, normal is about 3 months.

    Successfully finishing the course would put you at an early intermediate level of conversational ability. You should be able to easily carry on everyday social and commercial conversations with native speakers of Spanish.

    Another fairly unique aspect of Rocket Spanish is its emphasis on good pronunciation. One of their selling points is that you will learn to speak Spanish like a native. This is not University level proper "Castellano", as the pure form of the language is called, but everyday conversational use Spanish. You will be able to understand and make yourself understood when talking to ordinary people.

    The only limitation is that the course does not impart a thorough grounding in grammar, verb conjugation and vocabulary. But it does provide an excellent beginning framework within which to add these skills later, if you choose.

    In summary, Rocket Spanish is an exceptionally good overall conversational course. It gives you a sound foundation in pronunciation and conversational basics. It puts you well beyond "advanced travelers' Spanish" into intermediate level conversational ability in the language.

    Rocket Spanish seems to be all that its sales copy says that it is. It may well be the very best available anywhere. I do not have detailed knowledge of all programs out there, but so far, Rocket Spanish is by far the best that I have found. I strongly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn to speak Spanish.

    Book Review - The Economic Institutions Of Capitalism By Oliver Williamson

    In this book, Williamson presents a refined and elaborated version of his transaction cost theory that he had first outlined in his 1975 book Markets and Hierarchies: Analysis and Anti-trust Implications. His book attempts to systematically examine those economic issues that classical economic theory simply assumes away. The classical economics believes that markets are perfect, and if they are not then the action to remove market failures needs to be initiated. Williamson, on the other hand, focuses on these economic issues that are acknowledged to be widely prevalent in any economic system. "If complexity is deep in the nature of things economic then that ought to be acknowledged rather than suppressed. An equilibrium approach to economics is thus preliminary to the study of main issues (Hayek on P8)." This book, then, is a scrutiny of such economic phenomenon as market structures, monopolies, anti-trust policies, labor policies, public utility regulation, vertical integration and other economic institutions that have traditionally been neglected by the economic theory.

    His basic proposition that most of us are familiar with by now is that the transaction costs should be treated as a fundamental unit of analysis for understanding such issues. Drawing on three streams of research- economics, organization theory and contract law, he repeatedly highlights the need to consider the governance (or transaction) costs. "Rather than characterize the firm as a production function, transaction cost economics maintains that the firm is more usefully regarded as a governance structure (P13)." While his basic argument appeared sound and plausible, I got an impression that Williamson attributed more to transaction costs than it deserved. Why should we regard only governance costs? Why should we think that the firm is only a governance structure? In other words, in my view, instead of correcting an existing flaw in the theory, he seems to be, to borrow the stock market jargon, proposing an over-correction. The field would be better off considering a cost function that combines both production and governance costs or at least choosing the concept based on the specific requirements of the situation or problem at hand.

    Having said that, let's now delve into the foundations of the transaction cost economics which is first three chapters in the book. Until this book, Williamson considered opportunism, bounded rationality, frequency and uncertainty to be the building blocks of TCE. However, in this book, he rightly puts forth asset specificity alongside opportunism and bounded rationality as the three legs of TCE. "Any attempt to deal seriously with the study of economic organization must come to terms with the combined ramifications of bounded rationality and opportunism in conjunction with a condition of asset specificity" (P42), which is assumed to be the most critical dimension of TCE (P30). Without asset specificity, markets are believed to be in a competitive world even if people are opportunistic and rationally bounded. This is because buyers and sellers can freely move between market players.

    In contrast, uncertainty and frequency drop down a tad bit in the scheme of things. Now, they are supposed to be meaningful in presence of first three elements only. Conceptually, this makes a lot of sense. Take for example, if market players are uncertain about the outcomes, but they believe in the fairness of the parties to contract, the market mechanism would be adequate to deal with all the contingencies since the players would share equitably in the profits. However, we understand that such a behavioral assumption would be wrong since opportunism and bounded rationality are common behavioral traits. What intrigues me, albeit, is that if they are such common traits, then why they should even be made variables in the model. After all, a variable that doesn't vary is no variable at all. It is not surprisingly, therefore, to see most literature to refer only to asset specificity, uncertainty and frequency as the three pillars of TCE. Williamson himself seems to acknowledge this in a subsequent chapter when he mentions that "principal dimensions for describing transactions are frequency, uncertainty and asset specificity (P242)."

    After outlaying his conception of economic fundamentals, Williamson proceeds on to explain the boundaries of firm, which is to say what transactions will take place in market and what within the hierarchically organized structures. In his opinion, if the expected costs or risk of transacting in a marketplace are higher than the cost of organizing the functions internally, then such transactions will take place within the firm. If we ignore his exaggerated claims, this is indeed novel and useful approach at looking the firm size and boundaries. No longer is the size of firm held irrelevant as is the case in classical economics. No longer is it believed that the firms will operate at marginal cost whether they produce internally or buy externally. It opens up a can of worms that classical economics under its perfect market and equilibrium economics assumptions puts aside as aberrations. This is a welcome change in the approach to the study of industrial economics.

    Next, Williamson moves on to the main theme of the book: providing alternative explanations vertical integration, mergers and monopolies, and joining issues with anti-trust enforcements. He believes that vertical integration results not because of technological determinism or a desire for monopolistic power but from a pragmatic desire to economize on transaction costs. In the similar vein, he contends that non-standard contracting practices such as long-term contracts are not monopolistic practices, but perfectly justifiable attempts at minimizing transaction costs. Further, he attributes such decisions "to a condition of asset specificity (P86)" since asset specificity in conjunction with uncertainty "makes it more imperative to organize transactions within the governance structure that have the capacity to work things out (P79)." The author makes a persuasive case for five out of six hypotheses on the boundaries of firm. However, his fifth hypothesis that claims that "firms will never integrate for production reasons alone" seems a little far-stretched. The fact that some firms organize for efficiency reasons doesn't and can't automatically preclude the fact that some firms organize for monopolistic or technological reasons. Once again, the author's case would have been better served by refraining from such overstatements.

    Next, Williamson turns his attention to analysis of such arrangements as can neither be classified as market contracts nor as hierarchical structures, but fall somewhere in between. Also known as hybrid structures, these include credible commitments, joint ventures, relational contracting, hostage models, reciprocal arrangements, and network relationships. His main claim is that even when such arrangements appear to be exercise of monopolistic power, they may be justifiable from transaction cost perspective. "A comparative institutional assessment of contractual alternatives discloses that efficiency purposes are often served by hostages and it is in the mutual interest of the parties to achieve that result. Not only can producers be induced to invest in the mutual interest of the parties to invest in the most efficient technology, but buyers can be induced to take delivery whenever demand realizations exceed marginal cost." Interesting proposition, but it doesn't explain the impact on the hostage (e.g. P&G) if the monopoly (e.g. Wal-Mart) decides to dump it! His second main claim derives from Coase's 1960 article on problem of social cost. Recall Coase's claim that when people are left to bargain among themselves, most economic externalities can be better resolved than when courts or other non-market interventions take place. Williamson develops on this proposition and claims that parties to a contract don't normally take recourse to courts, but try to use "private ordering" to resolve their disputes. I would presume this would chiefly be out of concern for future business relations.

    Let's wrap up this review with a summary of strengths and weaknesses. For the strengths, I will let the Williamson speak for himself. To quote him,
    "As compared with other approaches to the study of economic organizations, transaction cost economics (1) is more micro-analytic (2) is more self-conscious about its behavioral assumptions (3) introduces and develops the economic importance of asset specificity (4) relies more on comparative institutional analysis (5) regards the business firm as a governance structure rather than as a production function and (6) places greater weight on the ex-post institutions of the contract, with special emphasis on private ordering as compared with court ordering."

    While the theory is conceptually persuasive and logically sound, a principal weakness of transaction cost analysis lies in its post-facto nature of analysis. Notwithstanding Williamson's superb efforts, it has been rather difficult to define it in a way that it can be measured and tested. The theory in its current formulation continues to be plagued with a criticism that it's tautological in nature, after all ex-post facto any system can be shown to be economizing on transaction cost or at least that it will be eventually replaced if it doesn't. Therefore, transaction cost economics needs to find variables with predictive powers.

    Williamson mentions three limitations of his work- its crude form, instrumentalism, and incompleteness. To me, these appeared more to be challenges for future research rather than any weaknesses in the theory. Besides occasional excessive enthusiasm and exaggerations and the difficulty in operationalization of the concept, a major challenge in reading this book is to be prepared to learn a new language! Williamson's choice of words lives a reader with no less an impression.

    Overall, Williamson does a superb job in developing the transaction cost economics that had first appeared in Coase's 1937 article 'nature of firm', but had been left untouched until this work because of difficulties in operationalization and empirical testing. Williamson succeeded in overcoming most of these challenges and it is for the future researchers to meet the rest.
